Choices - February 2014

Dodi Palese - Hun Kal Remixes (Engrave LTD)
The first single from Dodi Palese last year released album Greeting from the Solar System. Original mix plus two remixes by Italian Guido Nemola, and the German's Snuff Crew.

Kindimmer - Workz On Dope (CLAAP)
Workz on Dope is a moving deep tune with a nice drive.

various artists - Remixes 1 (Odd Socks)
The sixth release of Odd Socks looks back, picking four previous released tracks and remixing them. New mix duties by Max Greaf, Imyrmind, James Creed, and Josh T.

Chieko Kinbara feat. Josh Milan - Just Like Love 2 (King Street)
The second series of mixes to this beautiful song performed by half of the legendary Blaze; Josh Milan with Chieko bringing magic from its violin. The many seem to prefer the Charles Webster mix, but for me is all about the musical Josh Milan Original mix.

Story - 007 (Story)
The Story series continues its deep journey. This time around its XDB who presents three deep trip and atmospheric tracks which border into techno territory.

Steve Huerta - Smoky EP (Manucci's Mistress)
Generic deep in this two track extended player from this British label who is enjoying a success in recent times. I like the pad driven Adrift.

various artists - Halal Prepared Vol.2 (Boe Recordings)
After four years Boe Recordings presents Vol.2 of the Halal Prepared which here presents three different artists. Two of these have been on the rising in recent times; Arnaldo and Anaxander, while label boss Ben Boe makes his solo producing debut, presenting my favorite track of this release 'Low Rider'.

Los Hermanos - Descendants of the Resistance (GMI)
The title shows the roots of this highly respected Detroit production team.  This latest album was officially released in Summer 2013 as a CD, and now gets the download purchase availability. Amazing!

Ikenga Project Carolyn Harding - Snow EP (Sound Kemystry)
Sound Kemystry is owned by Lady Blacktronica what is a sub-label to Sound Black recordings. Four mixes of Snow, and two other tracks 'Bullshit' and 'Ancestral Channels'.

Toto Chiavetta - Where Is Love Gone, Per Alm - Universal Drum Collection (Vialocal)
Two nice releases from the US label Vialocal.

Andy Compton - Ubutu (Peng)
Nice album from the Peng boss, who presents eleven tracks in which he explores deep sounds in diverse soulful, down-tempo, r'n'b, and Afro styles.

Baker and Helm - Lost Reels (Remote UK)
Remote from the UK continues to bring quality. Here is three lost reels from Baker and Helm all with that old school Chicago vibe to them.

Tim Piano and Tiff - Back In The Situation (Mussen Project Records)
In recent releases Whim-ee has been going back to its techno sounds, but in this one it returns to its deep house.

Auji - Conclusion Came To You (Aniara Recordings)
Another of the nice deep space trips from the Swedish Aniara Recordings. This was originally out in the fall of 2012 on vinyl and continues the digital conversion to some of the famous titles recently being done by this label.

Hardcore Traxx - Dance Mania Records 1986 - 1995 (Strut)
Strut picks 24 famous tracks from this legendary Chicago label. Can you go wrong with that.

Choices - January 2014

Marcello Napoletano - Rush EP (What Ever Not)
What Ever Not's third release comes from the sublime Marcello Napoletano, who presents a varied four track extended player.  Napoletano continues his signature sounds all inspired to old school underground Chicago and US house.

Situation - Walk In My Shoes (Situationism)
Head straight to the nice deep trip present in the Bitter Suite dub.  Nice job Matt!

Brad P - Inner Visions (Inner Shift Music)
Light Years just kept on coming to my head, but all this four track extended player is amazing. Vinyl only release, but Brad P has also an album coming in digital later on this year.

DJ Gene and IsaQDeep - Otti Titi EP (Touch Africa Music)
Nice deep atmosphere in the IsaQDeep Samba mix of Sinkrossi.

Louie Vega Starring Duane Harden - Never Stop (Vega Records)
In my opinion he is still away from his best, non the less the Vega Bar Dub deserves.

Onto Hek - Object Orientated Ontology (Golden Mist Records)
Press play on Tonal Fingering Visual Research. How could you not with a title like that.

Kez YM - Roots Bound (Faces Records)
Kez YM returns to Faces Records after two years, and presents a nice deep house with funk soul fusion inspired four different track player.  It's good.

Garben - What Y Feel (Remote)
Remote presents its fourth vinyl release, which after a few months is now available in digital. This is another wicked one from this nice British label. In watch list!

Aphreme - Sense of Touch EP (Next Generation Records)
This label has been going on since 1989.  For this latest quality outing it goes to Poland and here finds Aphreme who delivers a nice two track extended player.

Blaq Soul - Vision Remixes by Karizma and Blaq Soul (Deeper Shades Recordings)
Two nice remixes for Vision first featured on the early 2012 released Deeper Shades Vol.2 as presented by Lars Behrenroth. Karizma makes a nice trip, while Blaq Soul accentuate more the drums and the chant.

Radkovski - Big (Instabil)
Radkovski is a fairly new Ukrainian producer who presents Big a three different track extended player. Check him out.

SoulPhiction - Live Jamz 1 (Philpot)
You gotta believe me for saying that here we have two impressive deep, raw tracks from SoulPhiction. By the way these come from a recorded live jam as the title says. One of my favorites from the month.

The Gabivon Brothers - Another Level (Blacksole Entertainment)
We left this South African duet back in the Summer of last year with the good Unthinkable EP.  Now they are back with a nice African tribal and jazzy two different track release.

DJ Spen Presents Michele Chiavarini + The Jazzcodes - The Music Tells Me (Quantize Recordings)
The broken beat original mix is pure listening pleasure.

Kai Alce - World Causes (NDATL Music)
Kai Alce starts 2014 with a different three track extended player. In this I like the Latin infected track World Causes which drum wise reminds me of Eric Kupper's Havana project on Wave Music in 2000.

various artists - The Early Emmissions Ep's 1 - 4 (Firecracker)
The good Firecracker joins it's early extended players in a digital format, most of which come from known names as Linkwood, and Fudge Fingas.

Patchworks - Early Recordings (Patctworks Productions)
This French production team lead by Bruno Hovart presents some of its early recordings in one package. Timeless soul, jazz, and funk with a house groove.

Review: Marcello Napoletano - Rush EP (What Ever Not)

An Italian proverb says there is no two without a three, and as you can see by the title this is the third release from label What Ever Not. This time around for WEN003, bosses Dan Mela and partner Dodi Palese pick there friend Marcello Napoletano, who presents a different four track extended player titled Rush. Marcello is no new producer in the deep house panorama starting up in 2007 on Radiance, and since then releasing among others also on famous labels as Mathematics Recordings this being one of his greatest supporters, YORE, Quintessentials, Laid, and in 2012 also founding his wax only Marcello Vinyl which so far features three releases. As is expected Rush EP features Marcello Napoletano going into his old school raw deep Chicago house influenced sound, with the four very distinct different mood tracks titled; And Now A Grace's Grass Joint, Rush, Almanacco, and Survivor.  For the different moods the tracks in WEN003 present, I will call them the Good, Bad, Ugly, and the Romantic, taking stint from an old Italian Western movie by Sergio Leone.  The good mood track is And Now A Grace's Grass Joint.  Bad mood goes to the deep and dark Rush. Ugly is definitely the track titled Survivor which also features an interesting sample from Lil Louis I Called U and is the most peak timer of the tracks. Romantic is surely Almanacoo which inspires to old school New York soulful garage sounds.  A must have!

Choices - December 2013

Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana - Movement EP (Moods and Grooves)
After Underground Quality in 2010, and Minuendo Records earlier this 2013 year the Maltese deep house masters put there name on one of the most renowned highly respected US Detroit labels, i.e Moods and Grooves. In this four track extended player Owen and Melchior show there jazz deep side.  Collection stuff!

Brian James - Lord of the Shadows (Batti Batti)
Surely a fellow Maltese DJ who helped spread underground in Malta in the early nineties.  This is his first release on the Maltese Batti Batti label, what is a two tunes of deep house acid flavor trips.

Sobz and Soulpoizen feat. Goo J. Poet - God's Peace (Soul O Music)
Five mixes for Gods Peace and the very good Latin flavored magic Sabela.

Kisk - Friends EP Bonus Track Version (Apparel Music)
After the three volumes of the Kisk and Friends series comes this Bonus Track Version extended player.  In this Kisk, the Apparel label boss collaborates in three of the five tracks with Undeep, Accatone, and Ed-ward.

SoulVarti with Tantra-Zawadi - Jazzy Nights For Jayne Cortez (Peng Africa)
Seven mixes in this latest from Peng Africa.  My preferred is the Ta-Ice dub and it's infectious bass line.

Juan De Dios - Dark and Light EP (Nylon Trax)
Juan De Dios makes his second appearance on Nylon Trax and presents this different four track extended player.  Underground, deep, and dub sounds here.

various artists - Tony's Traxxx (Tony Records)
Legendary Tony Hunphries selects eleven tracks by Luis Radio, Spellband, Tony Jesus, Rikki Montanari, Alex Font, Pako di Rocco, Roby Maas, and Jacopo Gagliardi.  Take your picks.

various artists - Late Night Serenades, Vol.1 (Serenades)
Four different artists tracks extended player.  The Plenty Herbs track Mood is the best in my book.

Moniker - Billy D (Circus Company)
Deep trip in the remix by Detroit man Patrice Scott.

Neville Watson - Hot and Heavy EP (Don't Be Afraid)
The second catalog from the Don't Be Afraid Special Edition series.  This one sees Neville return to Don't Be Afraid with this three track extended player.  I like the deep house Hot and Heavy, with the other two tracks being techno.

Takuya Matsumoto - Drafting Under The Stars, various artists - Goshiki (iero)
Japanese label Iero releases some of its vinyl in digital format.  The man to watch here is Takuya Matsumoto and his Detroit techno jazz sounds.

Genius of Time - Gliese 581g (Aniara Recordings)
Originally released in 2011 and since then has been one of the most sought after vinyls.  Now gets a repress and a digital release.

various artists - The Recollection Part.2 (Offering Recordings)
Twenty tunes all in Afro Soul House from the nice Offering catalog. Take your picks.

various artists - 5 Years Deeper Shades Recordings (Deeper Shades Recordings)
This nice West coast San Francisco label celebrates five years with the fans, giving them 31 tracks in one release at a convenient price.   Nice stuff with known names and previously unreleased material.

various artists - The MC / Son (stilove4music)
This highly regarded label part of the Still Music family from Chicago has recently transferred its only vinyl catalog into digital.  This is its latest release with four tracks produced from Rick Wilhite and Tim Mcallister.

AD Bourke - Prelude (Five Fold)
A new label and a growing producer in this four track extended player.  Deep nu-disco sounds with Prelude being the best of the tracks followed by the beat less A Night in Almeria.

Johannes Albert - Hotel Novalis The Remixes (Frank Music)
Fred's P remix of People Say is the top one here.  But the Moonin remix of Muskrat Susie deserves.

Review: Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - Movement EP (Moods And Grooves)

Debuting on Connecticut's Underground Quality label, followed by The Riot EP on Batti Batti and more recent a superb 10" titled Here For You on Spanish label Minuendo, the Maltese duo Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana head to Detroit with a outstanding four-track EP titled Movement on the highly praised label Moods and Grooves; the label with previous releases from Moodymann, Kyle Hall, Rick Wade, Brad Peterson, Andres, Theo Parrish, Glenn Underground, Anthony Shakir, Mr. G, and Mike Grant to name a few. When a label of such caliber turns its attention to Europe it has to be something special, since from a catalog of over 50 releases only a few of the artists hail from the old continent. In this extended player Owen and Melchior show a new side to their various deep faces thus far, with a vibe leaning towards Afro Jazz house sounds. The four tracks in this player; Movement, Sentimental, That Feeling, and Mesmerised are definitely for the refined audience. Movement, the title track of this EP opens the groove with solid phasing drums and alternating rhodes chords leading to a jazzy break and followed by build up of raw 909 hats and snares. Sentimental is the most atmospheric yet soulful track of this release with saturated afro percussion, ambient pads and a brass-like chorus taking the listener to other places with it timeless melody. On the flip side That Feeling takes an old school deep house approach with warm pads and jazzy vibes reminiscent to the classic Guidance Recordings. The last track Mesmerised is a 7 minute broken-beat Afro jazz masterpiece with drowsing brassy pads and moaning leads.
